In an interview with Fox News anchor Brett Baier on Wednesday, Kamala Harris made it clear that her presidency would not be an extension of President Joe Biden’s, while sharply criticizing her Republican rival, Donald Trump.

When pressed about how her presidency would differ from Biden’s, Harris emphasized her intent to bring new ideas and a fresh perspective, stating,

Let me be very clear, my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency.”

Harris highlighted that, like any new president, she would draw on her personal and professional experiences to guide her leadership. The discussion focused heavily on immigration, an area where Harris placed blame on Trump for derailing bipartisan efforts to address issues at the southern border.

The interview quickly grew tense, with Baier interrupting Harris early on as she responded to immigration questions, prompting her to ask for the chance to finish her points.

A reporter asked Harris about apologizing to victims’ families, and she admitted the U.S. immigration system’s long-standing flaws. She stated,

“I have no pride in saying this is a perfect immigration system,”

Harris dismissed a new Trump ad focused on taxpayer dollars being used for gender reassignment surgeries, calling it fear-mongering. She accused Trump of spending millions on divisive rhetoric instead of offering real solutions for the American people.

She argued that Trump’s policy on the issue was no different and that such ads detract from the more pressing concerns of voters. Harris also contrasted herself with Biden by positioning herself as part of a new generation of leadership, someone who hasn’t spent most of her career in Washington, D.C.

I think [Trump] spent $20 million on those ads, trying to create a sense of fear in the voters, because he actually has no plan in this election that is about focusing on the needs of the American people. $20 million, on that ad, on an issue that as it relates to the biggest issues that affect the American people, is really quite remote. And again, his policy was no different.”

She emphasized her openness to ideas from across the political spectrum, including from Republicans and business leaders.

Harris Slams Trump as ‘Unstable and Dangerous,’ Accuses Him of Divisive Rhetoric

When it came to Trump’s rhetoric, Harris was particularly critical of his divisive language, accusing him of treating fellow Americans as enemies and even suggesting he would use the military against them.

She argued that in a democracy, a president must be able to handle criticism without resorting to threats of imprisonment against dissenters. Harris went on to question Trump’s fitness for office, pointing to former officials from his own administration who have expressed similar concerns.

Harris described Trump as unstable and dangerous, stating that both she and Republicans believe the American people are tired of a leader who focuses on personal grievances instead of the nation’s needs.

Over the last decade, it is clear to me and certainly the Republicans who are on stage with me, the former chief of staff to the president, Donald Trump, former defense secretaries, national security adviser and his vice president, one, that he is unfit to serve, that he is unstable, that he is dangerous. And that people are exhausted with someone who professes to be a leader who spends full time demeaning and engaging in personal grievances and it being about him and American people.”
